Metabolic Surgery

Metabolic surgery is a method that has been used effectively in type 2 diabetes in recent years. It is popularly called diabetes or sugar surgery. Metabolic surgery is actually the treatment of metabolic syndrome, which manifests itself with obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension, with various surgical methods. When metabolic syndrome is left untreated, it can lead to death by causing organ damage and cardiovascular diseases as well as interfering with a person’s daily life. Early diagnosis and rapid treatment are needed. The success rate of metabolic surgery is quite high. It is the first method to be used in such cases.

Why is Metabolic Surgery Performed?

The main goal in the treatment of type 2 is not surgery, but exercise, weight control, medications and, when necessary, insulin therapy, which should be applied in all patients. However, all studies show that even in patients who are closely monitored and follow the rules, blood sugar levels are not at the desired level and diabetes-related complications often develop. In type 2 diabetes, the disease can be treated for a very long time with metabolic surgery.

Metabolic syndrome, on the other hand, is a type of disease characterized by an increase in waist circumference, hypertension, elevated blood fat levels and insulin resistance, and in advanced stages, diabetes. Metabolic surgery can effectively treat not only diabetes but also metabolic syndrome.

    Who is Metabolic Surgery Performed?

Metabolic surgery has no benefit for type 1 diabetic patients. Ninety percent of all diabetics have type 2 diabetes. These patients can regain their health with metabolic surgery. According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, there are approximately 500 million type 2 patients in the world, 90 percent of whom are overweight or obese. Body Mass Index is used as an obesity criterion.

How is Body Mass Index Calculated?

Body mass index is calculated as kilograms of weight divided by the square of the height in meters.

In medical classification, those with a body mass index between 18.5-25 kg/m2 are called normal weight, those between 25-30 kg/m2 are overweight, those between 30-40 kg/m2 are obese, and those over 40 kg/m2 are morbidly obese.

    Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculation

    BMI VALUEOUR STATUS
    Below 19.5 kg/m2Weak
    20 to 24.9Normal
    25 to 30Overweight
    30 to 34.9Grade I Obese
    35 to 39.9Grade II Obese
40 kg and aboveGrade III Morbidly Obese

Is Metabolic Surgery Effective in Diabetes Treatment?

Metabolic surgery has been proven to be the most effective method in the treatment of type 2 and has shown long-term efficacy of up to 90 percent. Some surgeries are more effective than others, but patients may experience side effects such as loss of vitamins and minerals and long-term diarrhea. The surgery to be performed should be chosen in the most appropriate way for the patient’s condition and by taking into account the cost-benefit calculation.

Not every patient benefits equally from metabolic surgery. While the majority of patients may no longer require insulin, some may still need medication. What is important is that, even if the patient continues to use medication, blood sugar control and the prevention of diabetes-related complications are maintained.
