Obesity Is Not A Cosmetic Problem

Obesity; is not a cosmetic problem that arises from over eating and out of self-control.The World Health Organization defines obesity as a chronic progressive disease resulting from many environmental and genetic factors.Obesity is an important health problem not only economically but also affecting the life span and quality of the individual.Obesity is a condition that needs to be under constant control and consideration throughout life because of the progressive effect and secondary disease problems.

Obesity is characterized by excessive accumulation of fat in the body. Body mass index BMI is one of the simplest methods used to describe overweight and obesity.

The most preferred method for determining the weight category and the degree of obesity is the calculation method called BODY MASS INDEX (BMI).

BODY MASS INDEX; Dividing the weight of the body in kilograms into the square of height in meters, is the resulting figure. It does not change according to age and sex. It is a standard calculation for all adults.

Despite There is some exceptions, the body mass index shows the amount of excess body fat that an adult individual has. In simple terms, the weight of a person is calculated by dividing the weight by the height in square meters.

There are 5 values to classify obesity; 20 to 24.9 kilograms per square meter is considered normal.

A body mass index of 25 to 30 kilograms per square meter is overweight, a body mass index of 30 to 34.9 kilograms per square meter is class 1 obese, a body mass index of 35 to 39.9 kilograms per square meter is class 2 obese, a body mass index of 40 kilograms and above the mountain is class 3 obese. In other words, it is considered morbidly obese.

The obesity we need to solve surgically is body mass index 35 and above.

If the body mass index is between 35 and 40, if the patient has diabetes, heart disease, high levels of bad fatty acids such as hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, and sleep apnea syndrome, then surgical treatment is recommended.
